Spain: all fueling stations to have natural gas dispensers

The Spanish company Gas Natural is negotiating the installation of CNG dispensers with gasoline retailing companies, with the purpose of stimulating the use of this fuel in private automobiles throughout Spain.

Pedro Fábregas, Chief Executive of the Gas Natural Foundation, explained that in this country there are already models that run on natural gas, and he added that the number is not larger not because of lack of users but because there are no many fueling stations. The conversion of the automotive fleet to methane might reduce by more than 85% nitrogen oxide emission, and diminish noise and vibrations levels, in contrast with diesel engines.

That is the reason why Gas Natural tries to promote this fuel since it presents obvious environmental and economic advantages, with a 25% saving with respect to diesel in terms of Euros/kilometers for drivers.

Fábregas insisted, in addition, on the necessity of subsidies from the Government to facilitate natural gas implementation in fueling stations. He indicated that Madrid is one of the first cities to use this fuel for public transport, and remembered that on the Capital City streets there are already ten taxis with engines modified to work with CNG.

The project is based on the Plan of Liquid Fuel Substitution, initiated with great success in 1984 in Argentina. This initiative resulted in an automotive fleet that exceeds the 1,500,000 NGVs.
