Workshop on Liquefied Natural Gas for Vehicles: Potential For Europe
5th & 6 December 2006, Amsterdam (The Netherlands)

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is going to take an increasingly important role in the European energy mix over the upcoming decades. LNG imports are anticipated to increase steadily and 10-20 new receiving terminals are being constructed in order to handle and store LNG that will be added to the expanding natural gas pipeline network throughout Europe.

LNG used in vehicles – mainly heavy-duty trucks and for marine applications – has been increasing slowly in Europe. These vehicles use the same engine technologies as compressed natural gas but the fuelling and fuel storage systems have been adapted to handle the cryogenic fuel. LNG is seen as an opportunity to bring clean, gaseous fuel engine technology to market and also to provide much longer range than CNG. Additionally, there will be new opportunities for liquefied-to-compressed natural gas (L-CNG) fuelling stations whereby LNG and CNG can be offered side-by-side without the need for compressors! Additionally, new opportunities are being explored to create LNG using the pressure drop from high pressure pipeline natural gas to lower pressure in order to create LNG without expensive liquefaction plants. LNG also could be a potential to help purify biogas into biomethane suitable for vehicle applications. LNG specialists specializing in vehicle applications or interested in new markets as well as newcomers to the field will find this workshop valuable. Presentations will be related to politics, marketing and technology. While substantial technical information will be presented, anyone with a background in natural gas and/or NGVs should find the presentations informative and stimulating. Taken together, the workshop will provide a window into the most recent L-NGV activities with an eye toward strategies for the future that can be pursued by ENGVA and our members to further enhance a growing market for LNG as a vehicle fuel for the widest range of over-the-road, non-road, and marine applications.

Some of the remaining impediments to the more rapid expansion of LNG vehicle and fuelling technologies are the lack of standards (and regulations) and a lack of more widespread information about the potential of LNG for vehicles. ENGVA has, in past years, sponsored several LNG workshops with the intention of motivating the creation of LNG standards for vehicles. Unfortunately, since the last ENGVA LNG workshop in 2002, there has not been substantial support for developing European or international LNG standards. Meanwhile, in the United States where there are some 3000 LNG vehicles and a supporting network of fuelling stations, the LNG-vehicle market continues to expand. ENGVA feels the time is right to provide some new European focus on LNG vehicle and fuelling station applications.

The Program: 5 & 6 December 2006

The program will provide a brief (and reasonably priced) opportunity for European LNG vehicle (L-NGV) stakeholders and champions to meet for a complete update on the progress of L-NGV in Europe and including a summary of L-NGV activities in the United States. Moreover, we will explore the opportunity to foster the development of LNG standards that will lay the foundation for more rapid expansion of L-NGVs. In order to facilitate efficient travel and minimize the overnights, the program will begin at 13.00 on the afternoon of the 5th and end at 12.30 on the 6th. An evening cocktail reception is provided for networking. Additionally, a small number of tabletop exhibit spaces are provided if equipment or service suppliers would like to highlight their products to the participants.

Subjects to be covered will include:

- LNG Supply Perspective Into the Future LNG Vehicle Activities in Europe (Over-the-road and marine applications)
- Summary of L-NGV Activities in the United States
- LNG and L-CNG Fuelling Opportunities and Technologies L-NGV Standards
- Market Development (and political)
- Strategies for the Future

Who Should Attend?
